With expertises and masteries, there are a fine, though simple set of rules. When prompted to choose an expertise, you may be prompted to select either a specific category (Proficiencies and Expertises) or a general allowance to pick from any group. Skill proficiencies and expertises may be acquired here in addition to general expertises and masteries, which provide unique shifts in gameplay. Expertises may have minimal prerequisites, such as class, proficiency with an item, etc. but a mastery will typically be locked behind rank, and more prerequisites.
